Health Services

Residents of Holyoke and nearby towns depend on the well-established network of health care available in the city. There are more than 120 physicians in family and specialty practices in Greater Holyoke, along with a general hospital facility. A wide variety of local nursing homes, assisted living facilities, and home care options serve the region’s growing senior population and other patients needing care at home.

Holyoke Medical Center

From its beginnings as a small community hospital in 1893 to
its present status as one of the preeminent medical facilities in the region, Holyoke Medical Center has remained dedicated to progress.

Located on a 15-acre campus, easily accessible to all major highways, the hospital has approximately 1,100 employees. It serves an aggregate population of 180,000 in cities and towns, which include Holyoke, Chicopee, South Hadley, Granby, Easthampton, Southampton, West Springfield and Belchertown. Each year the hospital discharges more than 7,000 patients, while the Emergency Department has an annual volume of 36,000 visits.

The medical staff is made up of 260 members, many of whom maintain offices at several on-site medical buildings. Holyoke Medical Center has completed an $11.1 million construction and renovation project, primarily designed to meet the increasing demand for outpatient services. Areas and departments included in the project are Surgery, Patient Registration, Front Lobby, Recovery Rooms, Laboratory, Cardiology, Anesthesia and Health Information Management, as well as the Gift and Coffee Shop.

The new construction involves two floors of the facility, and began at the main entrance of the hospital, now complete. The centerpiece of the expansion consists of two spacious operating rooms designed to accommodate sizeable high-tech equipment essential for modern surgical procedures.

 A full service facility, Holyoke Medical Center offers a complete line of medical/surgical services, including Emergency, Critical Care and an ultra-modern Birthing Center.

The Transitional Care Center and Valley Cancer Center, are more recent additions to the hospital campus, which is also home to the Center For Behavioral Health.

Holyoke Medical Center also offers employee health and therapy programs to corporate and municipal clients through the Work Connection, and a multitude of highly sophisticated diagnostic and laboratory services, including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and Positron Emission Tomography (PET).

A subsidiary of Valley Health Systems, Holyoke Medical Center is an affiliate of the University of Massachusetts Medical Center.


Providence Behavioral Health Hospital

A member of the Sisters of Providence Health System, Providence Behavioral Health Hospital is home to a variety of programs and services, including inpatient and outpatient psychiatric services, alcohol and drug treatment programs, laboratory and diagnostic imaging services, and physicians’ offices.

The adult, child, and adolescent behavioral health services at Providence Behavioral Health Hospital are part of the Sisters of Providence Behavioral Health Care Network, offering a comprehensive array of mental health, substance abuse, and child welfare services. Located in Suite 200 of the Catherine Horan Medical Building is a Life Laboratories Blood Drawing Station. A Diagnostic Testing Center at the hospital includes X-ray, ultrasound, mammography, and MRI services.

Also housed at the hospital are certain administration offices of the SPHS, which includes Mercy Senior Care Network comprising Beaven Kelly Home and Mount Saint Vincent Nursing Home, both of Holyoke; St. Luke’s Home and Mercy Care Center, both of Springfield; Brightside for Families and Children, West Springfield; Farren Care Center, Turners Falls; and Providence Care Center of Lenox; as well as the Providence Behavioral Health Care Network.


Mercy Medical Center

Mercy Medical Center, part of the Sisters of Providence Health System, is a 182-bed, acute care hospital in Springfield. Fully accredited and offering a complete range of patient services,

Mercy is dedicated to providing patients with health care that utilizes the latest in medical technology, but is holistic and high-touch in its approach.

Mercy’s comprehensive health care services include: Cardiac Care Network that is affiliated with the world-famous Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Center for Mammography, Diagnostic Imaging, Emergency Services and Primary Care Unit, Family Life Center for Maternity, Joslin Diabetes Center affiliate at Mercy Medical Center, Outpatient Treatment Center, Physicians Office Center, Sr. Caritas Cancer Center, Surgi-Center, Laser Center and Center for Sight.

Mercy’s staff is committed to treating beyond illnesses and injuries to include wellness programs, support groups, and educational programs.


Holyoke Health Center

Holyoke Health Center recently completed the final phase of its full service medical care complex in downtown Holyoke with the historic renovation of three connected commercial buildings. MHIC’s $18.9 million New Markets investment represents the largest investment ever made in downtown Holyoke.

Holyoke Health Center is a JCAHO accredited community health center providing primary medical, dental and preventive care to over 16,000 patients for over 30 years. Their mission is to improve the health of patients by providing quality health care and supporting comprehensive community-based programs to create a healthy community.  Most insurances are accepted and services are provided regardless of ability to pay.

The 175 employees include 30 medical and dental providers, 30 nurses, bilingual medical and dental assistants, case managers, outreach workers, and financial counselors.

Specialized disease management programs are provided for those persons living with Asthma, Diabetes, HIV, and other chronic conditions.


Home Care

 O’Connell Professional Nurse Service, Inc. is a private nursing service owned and managed by Registered Nurses. Staff includes Certified Home Care Aides, Certified Nursing Assistants, Medical Assistants, LPNs, and RNs. All O’Connell employees are carefully screened. Services provided 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Mercy Home Care, an affiliate of the Sisters of Providence Health System, provides at-home health care services that include skilled nursing care, physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, medical social services, and home health aide assistance.

Holyoke Visiting Nurse Association, Inc. Founded in 1905, the VNA is a private, not-for-profit home health agency certified by Medicare and Medicaid and fully accredited.

Services include skilled nursing; physical, speech, and occupational therapies; medical social work; and home health aides. Specialty programs include home infusion therapy, cardiac and COPD care, asthma intervention, wound care, and Hospice Life Care.


Nursing Homes, Rehabilitation Centers
& Assisted Living Facilities

Beaven Kelly Home is licensed and certified to provide residential care for those who need assistance with daily living, but who do not require skilled nursing. The trained staff is available 24 hours a day. Services include medication administration; housekeeping, laundry, and dietary services; and pastoral care. A wide range of social and recreational activities provides stimulation, relaxation, and opportunities for self-expression. Beaven Kelly Home’s respite care program offers temporary stays of one month or less. Beaven Kelly Home is a member of the Sisters of Providence Health System.

Holyoke Health Care Center is a well-known multi-care facility with full nursing and rehab services. With more than 100 beds available for nursing care, the former Buckley Center has been a stalwart of the Holyoke health care community for many years.

The Geriatric Authority of Holyoke’s Nursing Home and Convalescent Center has 120 beds for both skilled and intermediate-level care, administered by a staff of 160. Rehabilitation, physical, and speech therapy are available in-house. The Geriatric Authority also maintains an Alzheimer’s Resource Center for both residents and the community.

Loomis House is a 92 bed skilled nursing center on the campus of a Continuing Care Retirement Community. In an innovative resident-centered and home-like environment, the Nursing center is able to meet the diverse needs of its residents through short term rehabilitation, long term care, specialized Alzheimers care, and respite stays. As important, residents of the Nursing Center may enjoy the benefits of being linked to a full spectrum of services including Supported Independent Living and Assisted Living–all available through the Loomis Communities continuum of care.

The Soldiers’ Home in Holyoke is a multifaceted healthcare facility available to eligible Veterans of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. It is fully accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) and is inspected annually by the Veterans Administration. Its dedicated staff of Doctors, Nurses, and Administrative support personnel have one goal: to provide the best “care with honor and dignity” to Veterans of all wars.

Mont Marie Health Center, Inc. is a licensed and certified skilled nursing facility, sponsored by the Sisters of St. Joseph. A Catholic, not-for-profit facility, Mont Marie provides comprehensive services that promote, maintain, and restore health while fostering independence and wellness. Professional skilled nursing and medical care, as well as recreational activities, cultural events, and pastoral care are provided.

Mount St. Vincent Nursing Home, a member of the Sisters of Providence Health System, is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations for both long-term and special care. Services address the physical, mental, and spiritual needs of each resident, and include skilled nursing care and physical, occupational, and speech therapy. The Center for Special Care is dedicated to caring for persons with Alzheimer’s disease. Mercy Adult Day Health at Mount St. Vincent provides support services to help persons with disabilities and older adults to continue living at home. The program seeks to rebuild quality of life through health services, socialization, and rehabilitation.

Renaissance Manor on Cabot is a 36-bed facility specializing in physical rehabilitation delivered by in-house therapy staff utilizing individualized treatment plans. Also offered are hospice services and respite care for caregivers in need of reprieve. It is a Medicare-certified facility with private and semi-private accommodations exclusively.

Sarawood Assisted Living Home is family owned and operated with a capacity for 28 residents. Services provided include three meals daily, weekly housekeeping, medication management, assistance with bathing and other personal care needs. Sarawood is located on two acres of landscaped grounds in the Highlands section of Holyoke in a restored Victorian mansion.

Holyoke Rehabilitation Center offers both skilled nursing care and rehabilitation in its 164-bed facility with private and semi-private rooms. Short-term and permanent care is available for both geriatric and younger patients.
